E810 – Over the years we have collected four or five Ewe men’s cloths with this dark green and dark blue warp striped background but this one is my favourite, being notable both for the exceptional variety and complexity of the supplementary weft float motifs and for the unusual colour palette and again the variety in the weft faced blocks. The float motifs are mainly in white and pale yellow and combine a great variety of motifs, including people, animals and fish, with a repetition of triangles and zigzags. They alternate along the strips with weft faced blocks in a colour palette dominated by creams and pale pinks but with a few much more vivid pinks and purples, some of which are in silk rather than cotton. Dates from circa 1900-20s. Condition: Overall in good clean condition but with a soft well used handle and signs of wear and some minor perishing of silk on some float motifs and weft blocks.

Measurement: 116 inches x 68 ins, 295cm x 173cm
