FR809 – Neatly woven example of a classic style that French colonialists called “couverture de Segou”, Segou blankets, this thick slubby indigo and white handspun cotton cloth is the work of a weaver from the Fulani or Bamana people of Mali in the Banamba region circa 1920s-1950s. The indigo dyeing would have been carried out by a Soninke woman dyer. These cloths were called dampe in Bamana and damiye in Soninke, from the French “damier”, meaning checkerboard pattern. In excellent condition, one small faint mark on the back.
