FR628 – Fine tubular Dida cloth with classic tie dye design on the plaited raffia ground. These cloths were worn and displayed during ceremonial dances. Made only by a few women among the small population making up the Dida ethnic group in south western Ivory Coast, the remarkable textiles are plaited together from raffia palm fibres without the use of a loom, then tie dyed using natural pigments, producing a unique puckered crinkled surface. Early to mid C20th. Condition: has a patched repair and a number of small holes – Note that the technique of making and tie dying these flimsy raffia textiles typically leaves older used examples with numerous small worn holes..
Measurement: approx. 38 inches x 13 inches, 96 cm x 33cm
