Superb Yoruba agbada robe dating to around 1900, with very fine embroidery in the classic “eight knives” design on asoo oke strip weave woven mainly from magenta ‘alaari’ silk from the trans-Saharan caravan trade with narrow white warp stripes, and a hand spun indigo dyed cotton weft. The strips used for the body of the robe are folded in half length-ways, giving added weight and thickness. Dates from circa late C19th. In excellent condition.
