AS550 – Superb early C20th indigo aso oke strip weave from the Yoruba region of Nigeria with a subtle ikat pattern on a background of hand spun cotton in the speckled guinea fowl or “etu” design. In excellent condition – retains original hand stitching. Dates from circa 1900-20. Although Yoruba aso oke weavers were one of the very few weaving groups in West Africa to use the ikat technique it remained relatively unusual, with most examples confined as here to a simple alternation of colours within a warp stripe. Nevertheless the finest examples from the C19th and early C20th had a restrained elegance and beauty.
