FR666 – Superb and rare Dioula women’s cloth from northern Ivory Coast with a distinctive fringed border and characteristic Dioula extra weft float motifs throughout. The asymmetric design is unusual but a small number of other examples are known – it does not mean the cloth is incomplete, rather that the decoration and fringe are concentrated at the end of the cloth that would be visible when it was worn wrapped around the owner’s waist. Local hand spun indigo dyed cotton is combined with imported industrial cotton. Hand stitched and hemmed. Dates from circa 1930-50. Condition is excellent.
Measurements: 64ins x 47 , 164 cm x 120.
