E929 – Another unusually finely woven and elaborate version of the classic Ewe kente woman’s cloth design called “guinea fowl” after the blue and white check background. On this piece birds are particularly notable among the varied and well woven supplementary weft float motifs, offset by brightly coloured weft faced bands. Probably due to the high cost of commissioning cloths with this quantity and quality of float motifs and the lesser resources for ceremonial dress available to most Ewe women very few women’s cloths of this quality were woven. Dates from around 1920-50. Condition is excellent.
Measurements: 78 ins x 48, 198 cms x 122.
