Description

Fine 1960s Yoruba adire alabere, “adire with the needle,” woman’s wrapper cloth from Abeokuta in south Western Nigeria. Carefully made stitch resist patterned cloth with repeats of four different motifs, including the groups of parallel lines that were called  pele, “tribal marks.  Similar marks were incised on the cheeks of children in certain Yoruba districts.  The cloth was dipped repeatedly in an indigo dye vat to create the intense dark blue colour, then, once it had dried, the threads stitched to form the motifs were removed. This beautiful example is notable for the careful placement of the motifs against the solid indigo ground.   In excellent condition.
