Description

Remarkably faded and much loved indigo cloth woven by a Fulani or Bamana weaver in Mali in the early decades of the twentieth century. In the format of a traditional munnyuure cloth, with carefully aligned weft stripes across the field, but instead of the typical weft float motifs the weaver has made the simplest possible floats, just little clusters of the the indigo thread against the white ground. Simpler and quicker to weave perhaps as the more complex munnyuure was said to require an exhausting amount of skilled craft. In any event I find the simplicity of this soft faded cloth very pleasing. In good, neat condition.
Measurements 7′ x 4’4″, 214 cm x 132.
