Subtle and unusual checkerboard effect on this Ewe kente men’s cloth with a pattern of alternating squares created by a blue supplementary flaoting warp running along the strip on a blue and white striped cotton background. By varying the length of the warp floats at regular intervals the weaver created the squared effect. This is the only example I have seen where the entire cloth was patterned by this technique. Dates from circa 1950s. Condition: some neat patched repairs.
Measures 119 inches x 72, 303 cm x 185 cm.
