Description

E903 – Superb example of a rare style of Ewe cotton chief’s cloth with the design entirely in the weft: blocks made up of two colours alternate with blocks composed of multiple narrow stripes, narrow black and white stripes demarcate the blocks throughout. In the two colour blocks subtle variations are created by alternating the two colours in the weft for four or six picks, then reversing the alternation for two picks, returning to the original for the next group etc.  Carefully controlled weaving throughout demonstrates that this  cloth is the work of an experienced master weaver working on commission for a chiefly patron. The density of the weft makes a solid, heavy cloth. In excellent complete condition.  Dates from circa 1930-1950. Measurement: 136 inches x 77 ins, 346 cm x 196cm
