AS629 – Yoruba woman’s shawl cloth, ipele, woven from exceptionally fine hand spun indigo dyed cotton, a subtle check pattern achieved bu white cotton stripes in the weft. Dates from circa 1900, retains most of it’s original neatly hand sewn seams (one later resewn by hand), and is in excellent condition. I hesitated to show this beautiful cloth online as it is such a subtle piece that its beauty can only really be appreciated by handling. The ability to spin such very fine even thread by hand was rare and cloths woven from it were expensive and highly valued.
Measurement: 71ins x 39, 180 cm x 98
