K264 – Exceptional early C20th silk and cotton chief’s kente. Really top quality early Asante kente cloths are extremely rare and difficult to source as they were only woven for senior king’s in very small numbers. This magnificent cloth is among the finest I have collected in recent years and would make a superb addition to any collection. The highest quality of Asante kente weaving was marked by both the variety of the extra weft float patterns, and the very tightly woven, jewel-like quality of the workmanship. On this early C20th man’s cloth, silk patterns in exceptionally fine scale are woven on a simple white cotton ground with a single black central warp stripe. The contrast between the austere ground and the luxury of the silk patterning adds to the visual impact. Dates from circa 1900-20s. Condition: good, complete – some very faint marks and very tiny losses to the silk, two or three small holes patched by a conservator. Measurement: 125 inches x 81 ins, 319cm x 206cm
