Description

E930 – Superb and very rare elaborately decorated woman’s kente cloth, Ewe, Ghana, early to mid C20th,

While men wore a single large cloth toga fashion, women in Ghana wore a matched pair of two smaller cloths, or sometimes a single cloth with a tailored blouse. This exceptional piece is notable for the quality and variety of its supplementary weft float motifs – weaving these motifs was time consuming and expensive as only the most skilled weavers could produce them. As women typically lacked sufficient spare resources to commission such a cloth from a master weaver top quality women’s kente, for both the Ewe and the Asante, are scarcer than similar quality male pieces. This is among the finest examples of women’s size Ewe cloth we have been able to collect over recent years. Motifs on this cloth include a snake, a group of fish with a wading bird, a man with fishing net, among others. The weaver has broken up the regular grid of the cloth to accommodate the larger than usual motifs.Condition is excellent.
