Rows of dark brown and cream elephants cross the white cotton ground of this very unusual 1950s Yoruba asooke woman’s wrapper cloth from Nigeria. Alternate strips have simple rows of openwork. Figurative weft float patterns were not common on C20th asooke but when they were used elephants like these were the most widely depicted. In excellent condition.
Measurements 82 inches x 57 1/2, 208 cm x 146.
