Early Red Ground Ewe

E947 – Early and interesting Ewe women’s kente with attractive red and blue striped ground.

E947 – I bought this piece despite it’s patched and repaired condition because it seems to me to be quite early, most likely nineteenth century, and has a distinctive and unusual style of extra weft float motifs. These include a number of idiosyncratic human figures. The background is a bright red with narrow blue warp stripes, with a single strip of solid red with a blue weft. Despite its condition issues this is both a beautiful cloth¬† and a piece with documentary interest.¬† Dates from circa 1900 or perhaps earlier.

Measurement: 95 ins x 55, 242 cm x 151.
