E911 – Unique and early Ewe kente cotton men’s cloth with three different strip patterns, each utilising a different technique. The simplest strip design, apart from the narrow red lower edge strip, is warp stripes of dark blue, yellow and red on agreen ground, crossed and regular intervals by groups of red and white weft faced stripes. The second strip type is entirely weft faced, with stripes of green, white, yellow, red, and black. The third strip has a vibrant yellow dyed ground, with a “toothed” pattern in blue that is distinctive of Ewe weaving and involved the careful alignment of a supplementary weft float with a supplementary warp flaot in the same blue colour. Dates from circa 1900 or earlier. There are some small ‘bleached’ marks along a rough line where the folded cloth has been in contact with something, but otherwise condition is excellent.
Measurement: 129ins x 72, 328 cm x 184.
