AS513 – Superb early C20th Yoruba aso oke woman’s wrapper cloth in the classic style that alternates plainer warp striped strips with strips of weft float motifs on a blue and white check ground. Cloths in this general style were woven from the nineteenth century through to the 1960s but with careful attention to details of style and materials examples can be dated with some confidence. This beautiful cloth has clear well woven motifs in magenta trade silk from the Saharan routes, combined with warp striped strips woven from thread obtained via European merchants. The weaver has played around with the standard Koran board motif of the rectangle surmounted by an arrowhead, here weaving sets of two facing each other and echoing the shape in the paired triangle motifs. Condition: Excellent.
