The devil sits in a tall tree, while the Asafo officer in his embroidered war shirt and accompanied by two armed company soldiers look on. While trees are often a sign of danger where powerful animals and spirits can lurk, this depiction of a devil in a tree is highly unusual and distinctive. Flag made around 1970 by the prolific and long lived master flagmaker of the Anomabo workshop, Kwamina Amoaku (1895-1985) – See Forni & Ross, Art, Honor, and Ridicule (2017:61-62) for a discussion of this significant figure and the Anomabo workshop with which he was associated.
