On this finely woven Ewe kente cloth the focus of attention is on the shifting patterns formed by the solid blocks of colour in the weft rather than on float motifs. The weft faced blocks are carefully aligned to form a regular diagonal lattice pattern that holds in tension the various colours drawing the eye to emerging patterns in yellow, pale blue, orange etcetera. This effect in the static cloth would have emerged even more dramatically when wrapped around the wearer and in motion. The weft motifs are reduced to their simplest form as paired stripes. Quite an unusual but effective piece in excellent complete condition. Dates from around 1950
Measurement: 113ins x 75, 287 cm x 192.
