E814 – Spectacular mid C20th chief’s cloth in which the weaver has added blocks of yellow, a soft green, and dark blue to this design that usually sees just red blocks on the blue and white checked ground. This type of cloth was called “titriku” which just means “thick cloth.” Very decorative piece in very good complete condition. Dates from circa 1940s.
Note that these cloths should not be confused with much more common and later cloths from Mali that are also made up from strips of weft-faced blocks – these have a different colour palette and weight of cloth and are much more recent, dating mainly from the 1970s and after.
Measurement: 126 inches x 79 ins, 320cm x 200cm
