Excellent example of the classic style of Ewe chief’s kente robe cloth from Ghana, with pairs of weft faced blocks across the strips built up from multiple narrow stripes, carefully set out to form a regular grid on a complex warp striped background. Each pair of weft blocks frames a small supplementary weft float motif. Offsetting the regular layout the colours selected for the weft blocks form chance alignments and contrasts as the eye moves over the fabric. Dates from circa 1920-50. In excellent complete condition.
Measurements 310 cm x 181, 122 inches x 71.
