ASF191 – Superb flag by master flagmaker Kweku Kakanu (1910-1982) from the village of Saltpond, one of the finest artists from what was in my view the golden age of Asafo flag design. His work can be distinguished by the exact shape of the profiles, as well as his more dynamic imagery and borders (see Forni & Ross, 2017:57). A man pays homage to a seated chief, while two retainers hold bottles of gin or schnapps ready to offer as a gift or libation. Flags from this classic period by recognised master artists are now exceptionally hard to find. Condition: Mounted on a custom made stretcher. The red ground on this flag was made from felt and consequently extremely vulnerable to insect damage, as a result extensive patching by our conservator was required to mount this flag.
Measurement: 60 inches x 40 ins, 152cm x 102cm
