Description

Magenta alaari silk from the trans Saharan caravan trade routes is woven together with green cotton on this beautiful and rare nineteenth century Yoruba aso oke woman’s wrapper cloth from Nigeria. This combination of “red” silk and green cotton, with discreet highlights of yellow, was much prized for men’s robes throughout much of Nigeria at the time, but this woman’s cloth example is extremely unusual and clearly made for a wealthy patron. Two strips of silk with black and white cotton check give the characteristic asymmetric look to the cloth.

Measurements 76 inches X 52, 194 cm X 133.
