Quirky early version of the popular Asafo flag theme of a fierce leopard with a large tree, illustrating the saying “only a brave man goes beneath a large tree.” The dark spaces beneath trees were thought to shelter dangerous spirits as well as wild animals. Nineteenth century Asafo flags such as this are extremely rare and almost always found in worn and damaged condition. This one has been restored and mounted on a custom made stretcher, with patches on the reverse face prior to mounting. Note that this flag is unusually small.
Measurement: 34 inches x 29 ins, 86 cm x 74 cm
