ASF163 – Superb and extremely rare nineteenth century Fante Asafo flag from No 4 Company, “Wombir”, Elmina. A woman with a raised sword confronts a surprised man, illustrating the proverb “our women are ready for war.” This is an exceptionally finely sewn flag, with neat stitching outlining the two figures. There are a number of other flags that appear to be from the same company, No 4 Elmina, that share horizontal stripes in red, white and blue. See Adler & Barnard Asafo, 1982 page 89, and Kay Heymer Tanzende Bilder, 1993, numbers 1 to 5. It seems certain that this colour preference relates to the Dutch flag as the Dutch maintained a fort in Elmina until the 1870s and earlier fought alongside several Elmina Asafo companies against rival European powers. Dates from second half of the C19th. Condition: Has been mounted on a custom made stretcher, with patches on the reverse face prior to mounting.
Measurement: 58 inches x 44 ins, 148 cm x 112 cm
