AGB121 – Unique C19th Yoruba agbada robe with narrow warp stripes in red and pale blue imported thread on a dark hand spun indigo dyed cotton ground, and fine neat hand embroidery. At the time this robe was made machine spun thread was a rare luxury import that would have been a prestige addition. The lining at the interior of the neck and chest is of pale blue hand spun cotton strip weave rather than the usual trade cloth, the only time I have seen this. At the base the lining is a narrow strip of an old printed cloth. Dates from circa late C19th. In excellent condition.
Measurements: 96 ins x 48, 244cm x 122cm.
