FR602 – More recent than the cloths that I generally collect, this unusual woman’s wrapper cloth from Burkina Faso was probably woven by a woman on a modified metal frame version of the West African strip loom. This type of loom was introduced to Burkina through government sponsored “craft” training schemes and is now used by women weavers to produce a variety of innovative fabrics, many of which feature ikat. I was drawn to this piece because it combines a quite complex strip pattern that includes both ikat and a supplementary floating warp, with much older traditions of indigo resist dyeing. In excellent condition. Dates from around the 1990s.
