Beautiful Ewe chief’s kente cloth with a distinctive burgundy ground and a carefully planned design. On the two outer strips the ground weave with paired narrow yellow warp stripes is left undecorated, while the penultimate strips at each edge have weft faced blocks and some simple weft float stripes, after which the full elaboration of design evolves. Typically on Ewe kente cloths weft faced blocks are grouped in pairs of similar or identical colour, but here the blocks are in a novel arrangement of fours instead. Geometric extra weft float motifs, in white, pink, or orange are set within and between these groups of colour blocks. In excellent complete condition. Dates from circa 1930-1950.
Measurement: 112 ins x 65, 286 cm x 165.
