Description
Finely hand drawn starch resist indigo dyed “adire eleko” cloth from the Yoruba speaking southwest of Nigeria, circa 1960s. The characteristic grid patterning offsets the small leaves and squares with some larger, more organic, forms. I particularly like the cute little bug that the artist has drawn on the folded over margin (swipe) as a signature for identifying her work at the communal dye works. The cloth has been reduced from its original width, probably for wear by a child. Otherwise in excellent condition.
Measurements 6’7″ x 4’4″, 201 cm x 132.
