Unusual and beautiful Ewe kente chief’s cloth with a background that alternates strips that are dark blue with multiple narrow white warp stripes with strips that are solid white apart from three narrow dark blue stripes along the centre. Pattern blocks made up of two sets of mainly green, pale blue, and red weft stripes framing orange extra weft float motifs are aligned against plain areas in adjacent strips. The weaver breaks up the placement in two places so that the central area of the cloth offsets the two outer sections – this is the original sewing so presumably deliberate. In excellent complete condition. Dates from circa 1900-30.
Measurement: 112 inches x 74 ins, 286 cm x 188 cm
