The rare black background of this exceptional chief’s kente really sets off the colours of this tour de force of an Ewe master weavers artistry. Small weft blocks are built up from multiple colours of narrow stripes, alternating with extra weft float motifs that are predominantly in pairs and triads of elongated shapes. here and there there is a hand or another larger single motif but the weaver is mainly concerned to improvise a myriad of variations on the narrow motifs, echoing the improvised combinations of colours. Dates from circa 1930s. In excellent complete condition.
