Basket Weave Yoruba

NW556 – Rare and attractive Yoruba cloth from Benin or Togo

1 in stock

NW556 – Over the years we have found three or four of these rare and beautiful cloths on the market in Accra. Collected in Togo and Benin they are most likely the work of Yoruba women weavers somewhere in Benin Republic (where there are a number of Yoruba groups.) A simple technique involving careful variation of colours in the industrial cotton warp threads, combined with an alternation of two shades of indigo blue in the hand spun cotton weft produce this striking and unusual ‘basket weave’ type pattern that differs from anything else in the design repertoire of this region. In excellent condition. Dates from first half of C20th.

Measurements: 74ins x 45ins, 190cm x 110cm.
