ASF196 – Fine mid C20th Asafo flag by master flagmaker Baba Issah (1916-1991). Close attention to the details of Asafo flags has enabled scholars to identify the distinctive hand of a small number of master flagmakers, including the maker of this piece. Baba Issah was a prolific flag maker in the village of Agonu Swedru whose work can be identified by the figures and the way he did the canton flag in the corner. His work is in a number of museum collections including the Royal Ontario Museum, and his photo can be seen in the recent catalogue by Forni and Ross (page 66.) On this fine example two armed Asafo company members approach a pond with birds and two men collecting water. The two warriors were once wearing coloured shorts but these have worn away, also there are some minor repairs in the ground, otherwise condition is very good.
