FR655 – Large Malian wedding hanging of the type known as an arkilla kerka, woven by a Maabo weaver from the Fulani people. These dramatic cloths were commissioned as a prestige adornment for weddings, primarily by wealthy nobles in the southern reaches of the Sahara. Natural dyed wool throughout. The plain weft striped strip was used to hang the cloth within a tent. Dates from mid C20th. Condition is good, some worn areas at lower edge.
