Description

Yoruba asooke cloth is usually characterised by a rapid process of design change as new styles and colours come into fashion and old techniques are modified and updated. Very occasionally however we find a deliberately anachronistic piece like this, woven in the style of a classic C19th cloth but dating from mid C20th. Instead of hand spun cotton and alaari silk we have mill spun cotton and imported silk. The traditional Koran board or “Omolangidi” weft float motifs are updated with the text “OK”. Overall a very interesting curiosity. In excellent complete condition.

Measurements 6’5″ x 3’4″, 195 cm x 101
