Description

Intricately patterned stitch and tie resist indigo dyed Yoruba adire eleso cloth from Nigeria. This is an immensely laborious process requiring weeks of painstaking work both to create the resist pattern and to unpick the raffia thread after dyeing. The name eleso refers to the tiny seeds used to form the circular motifs. I’m not sure why the two panels are a slightly different shade but it adds to the effect. In excellent condition. Dates from circa 1960s. A well used piece so excess indigo will not run off. Measurements 77 inches X 64, 196 cm X 163.
