CODE#: AS436 - Very rare C19th cloth from the Nupe people of central Nigeria, made up of narrow 5cm (2 inch) width strips woven from fine hand spun white and indigo dyed cotton. The basic design of check patterning is broken up by blocks of wider stripes in the weft set out in an offbeat layout. The price reflects the fact that this cloth has been patched in several places using a strip removed from one edge, but it remains a beautiful and unusual piece.
