Jukun and Tiv weavers 2002

HOME

The Jukun and Tiv are two large peoples living in the so-called Middle Belt region of eastern central Nigeria along the valley of the Benue river. There is a long but troubled history of interaction and conflict between the two groups. We made a very brief preliminary visit to the region late last year and found Tiv weaving to be still quite widespread. In contrast there now appear to be only a handful of active Jukun weavers continuing what was once one of the most complex and fascinating weaving traditions in Africa. The gentleman shown here, Mr Navokhi Agbu is one of only two weavers still working in the Jukun capital Wukari.
