Togo. Circa 1900-10 Caption "Oberhäuptling Lawson von Anecho" Publisher unknown.
Anecho (Anexo) was also known as Little Popo. The Lawson family were wealthy merchants who challenged the authority of the king of the Ge (an Ewe group) and established a rival kingship. This rare image, like the previous card, shows the influence of Akan regalia traditions beyond the borders of present day Ghana. Here though the chief wears an elaborate imported fabric, as was typical in southern Togo and Dahomey.
