Nigeria, Circa 1905 Caption "Alake of Abeokuta" Publisher unknown. Abeokuta was the first inland Yoruba kingdom to come under British influence due to the strong missionary presence in the late C19th. The Alake, Gbadebo, (ruled circa 1892-1920) was a key figure in the transition to colonial rule. The sender of the card has indicated the Alake with an x at the foot of the card.
