Code: fr496 - Although Ikat weaving is particularly associated with the Dioula people of northern Ivory Coast, ikat decorated men's cloth from the Dioula (as opposed to the Akan Baule) are very rare. The two examples we have at present are among the very few I have seen. The most likely explanation for this would be that as Muslims Dioula men generally wore tailored robes rather than the wrapped cloths that were worn by their Akan neighbours. For more on Dioula ikat weaving see the post on my blog here This piece is woven primarily from hand spun local thread (except for the coloured central stripes) and is in excellent condition. It dates from mid-C20th. . Measurements: 118ins x 83ins, 300cm x 212cm. PRICE: US$1350.
