Code: AGB099 - Unusual early C20th Yoruba robe hand sewn from an ikat decorated strip pattern. Although ikat patterned robes from the 1960s are reasonably common it is rare to find much earlier examples such as this where the cloth used is woven primarily from local hand spun thread. Here the ikat central warp strip in each strip is framed by a prestigious fine dark blue check/ plaid that was called "etu" or "guineafowl." Hand embroidered with the "endless knot" motif. Condition: this is well used robe that is in neat clean overall condition but has a few minor faults: a couple of small worn areas (one at right of collar in photo below), some faint rust spots on one sleeve (see detail photo.) Measurement: 101 inches x 46 inches, 257 cm x 117 cm. PRICE: US$1100.
